Undeserved: Bushbamney’s Nobel Peace Prize, Peres’ Medal of Freedom, Sarsak’s Starvation in Indefinite Detention

Undeserved Obama Peres Sarsak

Undeserving Nobel Peace Prize recipient Obama awards Medal of Freedom to fellow war criminal Peres while soccer player Mahmoud Sarsak starves in Israeli jail.

UNDESERVED: BUSHBAMNEY’S NOBEL PEACE PRIZE, PERES’ MEDAL OF FREEDOM, SARSAK’S STARVATION IN INDEFINITE DETENTION

In a cruel twist of irony, Israeli President Shimon Peres was honored Wednesday night [6/13/2012] with the “Presidential Medal of Freedom” at a lavish White House feast while Mahmoud Sarsak, rising Palestinian soccer star, nears death by starvation. Sarsak is now on his 87th day of hunger strike to demand the basic human freedoms denied him by Peres’ government. To add insult to injury, Shimon Peres used this opportunity to present Obama with a petition to free an Israeli spy, Jonathan Pollard, who was caught leaking Pentagon secrets.

Peres is a man of extensive military and even insurgent background, who adopted religious views more extreme than the rest of his community. Peres has been quoted as saying that, as a child in Poland, he smashed his parents’ radio because they were listening during Sabbath. He joined the Haganah at a young age, an armed Jewish militia responsible for massacres, mass displacement and other human rights abuses. After the establishment of the state of Israel, Peres was in charge of the government’s weapons dealing. He was a fierce advocate of settlement activity, especially in his early career. He has been Minister of state, defense, communication, transportation and immigrant absorption, Prime Minister and is currently President. In his political career he has overseen massacres, wars, occupation, discrimination, human rights abuses, the breaking of political treaties and spearheaded Israel’s nuclear proliferation. His government currently detains Mahmoud Sarsak and over 500 other Palestinian political prisoners without charge or trial, against international human rights law.

According to his family, Mahmoud Sarsak had never cared about politics and spent all his waking moments thinking about and playing soccer. The Sarsaks are refugees from the city of Ashdod (approximately 20 miles south of Tel Aviv) but Mahmoud grew up in a refugee camp in southern Gaza. As a very young child, he excelled at playing soccer and by eleven he was already representing Palestine in the Youth Olympic Games in Tehran. He played on several teams including the Gaza Youth Sports Club and Rafah Sports Club. Due to the limited resources in the southern Gaza Strip, Sarsak moved to the north to play professionally. Soon outgrowing the Gazan league, Sarsak was selected to join one of the leading West Bank clubs. In 2009, he received the permits that Israel requires to go from one Palestinian territory to another and headed off to the West Bank to realize his dreams. Without any warning or explanation, Sarsak was arrested en route by the Israeli military. From his 2009 arrest until today, his peak athletic years have been wasted in Israeli jails. His detention under the vague “Unlawful Combatant” law [comparable to the indefinite detention provisions of NDAA 2012 as signed by Bushbamney on 12/31/2011] has been continually renewed without charge, trial or even allegation. Now he has spent almost three months in non-violent protest against the injustices leveled against him. Even if he survives his hunger strike, he will face many health issues that will prevent him from being a professional or possibly even recreational athlete.

Hors d’oevres and trophies for the militant, starvation and death for the peaceful civilian athlete. What kind of message are we in America trying to send to the world by giving freedom medals to the violent, and depriving the non-violent of their freedom?

Amerika: Neither Land of the Free Nor Home of the Brave

Amerika: Neither Land of the Free Nor Home of the Brave

If you are charged with a crime in Amerika, you are guilty unless you are rich. If you are struck by a drone from Amerika, you are guilty unless you survive.

AMERIKA: NEITHER LAND OF THE FREE NOR HOME OF THE BRAVE

“None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.”–Goethe

As things stand, when corporate fascist puppet president Bushbamney signs NDAA 2013 (H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013), bipartisan-sponsored Amendment 114 (based on H.R. 5736) will make it legal for the U.S. government to use Nazi Germany Goebbels-style “Big Lie” propaganda on its own citizens. And no doubt one of the biggest lies our ruling elite’s Demopublican operatives will continue selling us is that America is “the land of the free and the home of the brave”. That may have been somewhat accurate at some point in in our checkered past, but it’s certainly not true in today’s post-NDAA 2012 (Public Law 112-81) Fourth Reich “Amerika”.

LAND OF THE FREE?

How can Amerika be the land of the free when we have more laws on the books – and more people in prison for allegedly breaking them – than any other nation in the world?

Doubt that? Read this:

“So which country has the most laws regulating its citizenry? After looking high and low I discovered that the country with the most laws – not just today, but in all of history is… the United States. We not only have the most laws in all of history, but we also turn out more new laws and regulations to manage our people every single year than most countries turn out in decades.

http://tinyurl.com/7xp4l6f

“These new laws have come with an infusion of money into an expanded security system on the state and federal levels, including more public surveillance cameras, tens of thousands of security personnel and a massive expansion of a terrorist-chasing bureaucracy.”

http://tinyurl.com/88sq98d

“Half of the world’s prison population of about nine million is held in the US, China or Russia. Prison rates in the US are the world’s highest, at 724 people per 100,000.”

http://tinyurl.com/zkw7v

“Incarceration in the United States is one of the main forms of punishment and/or rehabilitation for the commission of felony and other offenses. The United States has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world. At year-end 2009 it was 743 adults incarcerated per 100,000 population. According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) 2,266,800 adults were incarcerated in U.S. federal and state prisons, and county jails at year-end 2010 – about 0.7% of adults in the U.S. resident population. Additionally, 4,933,667 adults at year-end 2009 were on probation or on parole.”

http://tinyurl.com/6m7dr6

HOME OF THE BRAVE?

How can Amerika be the home of the brave when our cowardly and illegal drone attacks are killing thousands of innocent civilians – many falsely counted as “combatants”, “militants” or “terrorists” – while at the same time more of our troops commit suicide every year than get killed in action?

Doubt that? Read this:

“Drones raise questions about the growing disconnect between the American public and its wars. Military ethicists concede that drones can turn war into a video game and, with no Americans directly at risk, more easily draw the United States into conflicts… The number of civilian deaths caused by drone strikes is unclear, and hotly contested. A report in February 2012 by the London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism said that drone strikes on suspected militants in Pakistan have repeatedly targeted rescuers who responded to the scene of a strike, as well as mourners at subsequent funerals.”

http://tinyurl.com/kqtjwl

In Pakistan (an American “ally”) alone, through mid-August last year as many as 2,956 people were killed and another 1,158 injured by U.S. drone attacks. Many were labelled “militants”, but the death toll includes at least 175 children and as many as 781 verified civilians. Despite all this collateral damage, no more than 150 “named militants” were killed. And again, these statistics are for Pakistan alone. How many more innocent children, women and men have Bushbamney’s immoral drone strikes murdered in Afghanistan, the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere?

http://tinyurl.com/3es3tez

“Mr. Obama embraced a disputed method for counting civilian casualties that did little to box him in. It in effect counts all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants, according to several administration officials, unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent.”

http://tinyurl.com/6mpvawo

“From 2005 to 2010, [U.S.] service members took their own lives at a rate of approximately one every 36 hours. While suicides in the Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard have been relatively stable and lower than those of the ground forces, U.S. Army suicides have climbed steadily since 2004. The Army reported a record-high number of suicides in July 2011 with the deaths of 33 active and reserve component service members reported as suicides. Suicides in the Marine Corps increased steadily from 2006 to 2009, dipping slightly in 2010. It is impossible, given the paucity of current data, to determine the suicide rate among veterans with any accuracy. However, the VA estimates that a veteran dies by suicide every 80 minutes. Moreover, although only 1 percent of Americans have served in the military, former service members represent 20 percent of suicides in the United States.”

http://tinyurl.com/3stynxb

“For the second year (2010) in a row, more US soldiers killed themselves (468) than died in combat (462). ‘If you… know the one thing that causes people to commit suicide, please let us know,’ General Peter Chiarelli told the Army Times, ‘because we don’t know.’ Suicide is a tragic but predictable human reaction to being asked to kill – and watch your friends be killed – particularly when it’s for a war based on lies.”

NDAA 2012 Codified Indefinite Detention. Now NDAA 2013 Legalizes Domestic Propaganda.

NDAA 2013

America’s two-party tyranny has authorized endless wars, warrantless surveillance, homeland drones and indefinite detention. Now they’re legalizing the Big Lie.

NDAA 2012 CODIFIED INDEFINITE DETENTION. NOW NDAA 2013 LEGALIZES DOMESTIC PROPAGANDA.

What the Democrats and Republicans agree on is far more damaging and dangerous than the wedge issues on which they supposedly don’t. We saw that last year with the enactment of Public Law 112-81, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 (NDAA 2012), which had bipartisan sponsorship and sailed through both House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan majority support. Now acceleratedly close on its heels comes H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 (NDAA 2013), which glided through the House with broad bipartisan support on May 18 and is now in the hands of the Senate:

http://tinyurl.com/6rt9xzt

Attached to that bill is a bipartisan-sponsored amendment summarized as follows:

“Amendment No. 114 – Reps. Thornberry (R-TX) and Smith (D-WA): The amendment would amend the United States Information and Educational Exchange Act of 1948 (known as the Smith-Mundt Act) and the Foreign Relations Authorization Act, Fiscal Years 1986 and 1987 to clarify the authorities of the Department of State and the Broadcasting Board of Governors to prepare, disseminate and use public diplomacy information [propaganda] abroad and to strike the current ban on domestic dissemination of such material. The amendment would clarify that the Smith-Mundt Act’s provisions related to public diplomacy information [propaganda] do not apply to other federal departments or agencies (including the DoD).”

http://tinyurl.com/6ndk8lr

The full text of the amendment is assumed to be H.R. 5736, euphemistically labelled the “Smith Mundt Modernization Act of 2013”. You can read that here:

http://tinyurl.com/7k98kqs

http://tinyurl.com/7eqx3fl

This amendment legalizes what many think the government has been doing for years anyway: using false propaganda to influence the decisions and control the minds of its own citizens. According to Buzzfeed:

“The tweak to the bill would essentially neutralize two previous acts – the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 and Foreign Relations Authorization Act in 1987 – that had been passed to protect U.S. audiences from our own government’s misinformation campaigns… The new law would give sweeping powers to the government to push television, radio, newspaper, and social media onto the U.S. public. ‘It removes the protection for Americans,’ says a Pentagon official who is concerned about the law. ‘It removes oversight from the people who want to put out this information. There are no checks and balances. No one knows if the information is accurate, partially accurate, or entirely false…’ Critics of the bill point out that there was rigorous debate when Smith Mundt passed, and the fact that this is so ‘under the radar,’ as the Pentagon official puts it, is troubling… The evaporation of Smith-Mundt and other provisions to safeguard U.S. citizens against government propaganda campaigns is part of a larger trend within the diplomatic and military establishment… In December, the Pentagon used software to monitor the Twitter debate over Bradley Manning’s pre-trial hearing; another program being developed by the Pentagon would design software to create ‘sock puppets’ on social media outlets [such as Facebook, Twitter and online forums]; and, last year, General William Caldwell, deployed an information operations team under his command that had been trained in psychological operations to influence visiting American politicians to Kabul.”

http://tinyurl.com/c78hhg9

DemandProgress.org asserts that “The NDAA amendment legalizing mass propaganda campaigns would remove all distinction between a hostile foreign audience and American one, turning the massive information operation apparatus within the federal government against its own people.” They offer yet another online petition/email campaign to oppose it, but many consider such initiatives to be impotent slacktivism:

http://tinyurl.com/7lq76h2

Our rapidly accelerating descent into Orwellian police-state fascism will not be stopped or even slowed by signing one online petition or one thousand. And it won’t be reversed at the ballot box, because voting either Democrat or Republican keeps the same corporate-controlled oligopoly in power, and voting any other way is at best an act of defiance:

http://tinyurl.com/7e57dqe

Our only solution is to take to the streets and quickly – before the drones overhead control our every move, and the droning of TVs and flickering of monitors our every thought.

Americans Have Three Choices In November: Bushbamney, Third-Party or Nobody

Bushbamney | Bushbama | Obamney | Obomney

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results – like voting on false choices in rigged elections with predetermined outcomes.

AMERICANS HAVE THREE CHOICES IN NOVEMBER: BUSHBAMNEY, THIRD-PARTY OR NOBODY

As they’ve done so many times in the past, on Tuesday 6 November 2012 American voters will go to the polls to decide absolutely nothing. At least not at the presidential level, where electing either corporate-controlled Democratic puppet Obama or corporate-controlled Republican puppet Romney will mean a continuation of perpetual wars for profit and oil abroad and continued constitutional erosion and decline into police-state fascism at home:

http://tinyurl.com/7ybcu7m

Of course they supposedly differ on social and other wedge issues the ruling elite contrive, revive and broadcast incessantly through mainstream media to keep people divided and fighting each other rather united and fighting them. But once they get elected, what really changes?

NOT MUCH.

After two disastrous terms with Dubya, Obama was sold to the Sheeple as “Change” incarnate in 2008. But what really changed? Goldman Sachs alum were in charge at the Treasury under Bush; Goldman Sachs alum are in charge at the Treasury now… Wall Street got bailed out while Main Street got sold out under Bush; that continues under Obama, but now we call it a “jobless recovery”… Our Military/Intelligence/Terrorism Industrial Complex had a blank check under Bush. Our Military/Intelligence/Terrorism Industrial Complex has a blank check now… In Iraq, hundreds of thousands died and trillions of dollars were wasted *after* Dubya declared “Mission Accomplished”; the death and destruction continues today, long *after* Obama declared our troops would be “home for the holidays”… Under Bush, we went to war in Afghanistan with Pakistan as our “ally”; under Nobel Peace Prize winner Obama the war has expanded, the situation has worsened, and American bombs and drones are now killing innocent civilians on both sides of the Af-Pak border and around the globe as well… Dubya gave us the USA Patriot Act and AUMF 2001, under which he declared executive authority to waive habeus corpus and hold American citizens in indefinite detention without charge or trial; Obama renewed the Patriot Act and signed NDAA 2012, which codified indefinite detention of American citizens by military as well as civilian authorities… Dubya filled Guantanamo with 9/11 scapegoats; Obama’s complicity guarantees none of them will ever get their day in open court… Dubya and Darth first used armed Predator drones to take out suspected terrorists – or innocent men, women and children asleep in their mud huts – in Af-Pak in 2001; Obama signed HR 658 releasing 30,000 such drones into American skies… Dubya used “free speech zones” to corral and avoid American citizens exercising their First Amendment Rights; Obama signed HR 347, making the exercise of those rights where and how it matters most a felony…

I COULD GO ON, BUT YOU GET THE POINT.

It is said that the Republican Party exists to make the Democratic Party look like a viable alternative to wannabe revolutionaries who don’t really wanna be revolutionaries. But does it? Clearly the Democrats and Republicans have the same core agenda and answer to the same global elite, so voting for the candidates of either merely perpetuates their “two-party tyranny”:

http://tinyurl.com/6om5ckt

So short of storming the Bastille, what options remain for the few Americans who actually give a damn about something other than sports scores, spoiled celebrities, (un)reality shows, choice-limiting apps for their slave-built iPhones and inconsequential updates to their Fakebook pages? Writing for Global Research, Professor Peter Phillips credits Chris Hedges with this suggestion:

“Don’t waste any more time or energy on the presidential election than it takes to get to your polling station and pull a lever for a third-party candidate – just enough to register your obstruction and defiance – and then get back out onto the street. That is where the question of real power is being decided.”

http://tinyurl.com/6oqj9yy

Others will say “Vote for Nobody!” in alignment with Wally Conger’s Anti-Electorate Manifesto:

“We, the Anti-Electorate, do not believe there is a need for ‘strong leadership’ in government. We are not drawn to ‘intellectual’ authorities and political ‘heroes’. We are not impressed with titles, ranks, and pecking orders – politicians, celebrities, and gurus. We do not struggle for control of organizations, social circles, and government. We do not lobby the State for favors or permission to control those with whom we disagree. Rather, we advocate freedom. By its very nature, the State does not. Exercise your right to say “No” to the warfare – welfare system. Refuse to vote. Then tell your friends why.”

http://www.anti-politics.ws/

Still others are asking themselves what Thomas Jefferson would do if he were alive to see what a mess we’ve made of things, and these words of his are really making the rounds:

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

Personally, I’d like to see us get to what I previously called “that point”:

“The traditional Left/Right, Liberal/Conservative, Democrat/Republican dichotomy is a false and failing paradigm propagated by the powers-that-be to perpetuate division. The true political spectrum is not a straight line but a circle: There is a point where Far Left meets Far Right, where Anarchism merges with Libertarianism and these and the rest of our outmoded labels melt away. In that point must we place our hope, for only from that point can we build a better future.”

If we can’t get to “that point”, then storming the Bastille may be the only alternative.

Seven Ways Apple Is Fleecing The American Sheeple

Apple iProducts | Planned Obsolescence | Sheeple | iFlock

How Apple Inc. exploits slave labor and misplaced customer loyalty to maintain a market cap comparable to ExxonMobil and a bank balance on par with Uncle Sam.

SEVEN WAYS APPLE IS FLEECING THE AMERICAN SHEEPLE

If you’re often part of the iFlock we see milling in front of the Apple Store with their eyes and wallets wide open every time Cupertino increments the version or release number of an iProduct, consider this a wake-up call. If as the owner of a struggling small business in desperation you’re about to spend four times as much for a “cool” native iPhone app as you would for a cross-platform Mobile Web app that might do twice as much for three times the market, consider this a warning. And if you’re an Occupy Wall Street protester or supporter reading this on an Apple iPhone, iPad or iMac, we sincerely hope that device was lost or liberated then unlocked and donated for your use. Now let us proceed with our observations of the obvious – in this episode, seven ways Apple Inc. is fleecing the American Sheeple:

1. Sending jobs overseas.

“Foxconn has 300,000 to 450,000 workers which are employed in Shenzhen China at the Longhua Science & Technology Park, a cramped, walled campus sometimes referred to as ‘Foxconn City’ or ‘iPod City’… [They] make everything Apple sells… One has to ask the question: How much less money would Apple make if those 400,000+ manufacturing jobs were based in the USA?… What kind of impact would almost a half a million manufacturing jobs have in the U.S. economy?”

http://tinyurl.com/6whxws5

2. Slashing domestic wages.

“Outsourcing [by Apple and other greedy global corporations] has become one of the biggest reasons for our economic decline… The desire of corporations to seek the cheapest labor possible has led to less work for Americans, and a larger disparity between the rich and the poor. Over the last twenty years this gap has grown tremendously, and is fueled further by the fact that Americans now take lower wages in an attempt to remain employed.”

http://tinyurl.com/czcnnyd

3. Selling iProducts with built-in obsolescence.

“The genius factory that Steve Jobs built is just another oligopoly pushing planned obsolescence [e.g. practically non-replaceable batteries] on a buying public that should know better… There’s only so much market growth a premium electronic product can wring out of the industrialized West, and Apple’s marketers know it. They don’t waste time growing the nonexistent iPad market among African bushmen who live beyond the reach of a WiFi signal. Instead, they know the real money is made from selling tiny improvements to existing customers [a.k.a. Apple Zombies] who just have to show off the latest gizmo to friends.”

http://tinyurl.com/buvvuna

4. Avoiding corporate income taxes.

“Apple’s headquarters are in Cupertino, Calif. By putting an office in Reno, just 200 miles away, to collect and invest the company’s profits, Apple sidesteps state income taxes on some of those gains… California’s corporate tax rate is 8.84 percent. Nevada’s? Zero… Setting up an office in Reno is just one of many legal methods Apple uses to reduce its worldwide tax bill by billions of dollars each year… Apple’s accountants have found legal ways to allocate about 70 percent of its profits overseas, where tax rates are often much lower… Apple has created subsidiaries in low-tax places like Ireland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the British Virgin Islands – some little more than a letterbox or an anonymous office – that help cut the taxes it pays around the world.”

http://tinyurl.com/d8gab84

5. Locking in vendors and customers.

“Many consider Apple to be the most vertically integrated company in the world: All Apple hardware and software are designed in-house, and Apple also runs its own digital content store, iTunes, along with the App Store and iBooks store… Apple has consistently [conspired] to limit consumer choice, creating a situation known as “lock in”. As soon as you start buying stuff from Apple, you’ll find it difficult to move to products made by someone else without losing everything you’ve already paid for… [For example, if] you switch to an Android device from an iPhone with iMessage activated, anyone who’s previously been sending you iMessages will no longer be able to send you texts.”

http://tinyurl.com/bp6ow6u

6. Obstructing Open Web development.

“The dominance of Apple and Google mobile browsers is leading to a situation that’s even worse for Web programming than the former dominance of Internet Explorer, a standards group leader warned… Daniel Glazman, co-chairman of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) group overseeing the formatting and effects standard called Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), said that programmers are overlooking other browsers when they use newer CSS features – even when those other browsers support the features. The result is that those other browsers – Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera, chiefly – might have to essentially masquerade themselves as other browsers. When that happens, the ‘Open Web’ – a programming foundation based on cooperatively created standards rather than proprietary features – is being thrown under the bus.”

7. Exploiting and accelerating technological dehumanization.

“Apple is an American success story… At one point this year, Apple had more money in the bank than the United States itself. It is a literal titan of industry… [Apple co-founder Steve Jobs] had no problem conceiving of himself as a counter-culture hero even as he became a cultural titan and business icon. Jobs’ success at presenting the company as counter-cultural, as much as any design intuition, is one of the most enduring and powerful of Apple’s assets. Apple’s success in retail is owed, ostensibly, to the fact that its products create emotional attachments to users. People (sometimes literally) love their iPhones and iPads. This relationship to technology seems dangerous. It’s dangerous because Apple is not in the love business; it’s in the business business. Apple’s goal is to make money – and lots of it… Apple is not run by a group of longhaired hippies, and it’s primary directive is not to save the world.”

Is AT&T U-verse Serving The People Or Fleecing The Sheeple?

ATT Uverse | AT&T U-verse | Screw-U-Verse

Ma Bell was notorous for corporate greed and customer abuse long before Lily Tomlin lampooned her on Laugh-In. And in today’s ATT Screw-U-Verse, the corruption continues.

IS AT&T U-VERSE (ATT UVERSE) SERVING THE PEOPLE OR FLEECING THE SHEEPLE?

Those of you still relying on mainstream media for news may be unaware of what Occupy Wall Street and the Global Revolution have planned for Tuesday, May 1 2012:

But for those of you in the Occupy Movement looking for some last-minute May Day recruits, what appears to be a rapidly growing base of disgruntled AT&T U-Verse customers might be a target-rich environment:

The following is a classic example of how Ma Bell continues to treat her customers like chattel, cattle or worse. We are masking some names, dates and numbers, but everything else is as per the story and supporting documents we received:

A little over two months ago, an AT&T telephone and DSL customer we’ll call “PL” needed a wireless Internet solution for her new tablet computer, so she called the number on her phone bill and eventually wound up speaking to an AT&T sales rep. The rep offered PL an Internet access solution that would support her old notebook as well as her new tablet for $24.95 a month plus a one-time $100.00 modem charge, and promised PL two $100.00 gift cards if she agreed to transfer to the new plan. PL accepted. Installation was scheduled for sometime during the day on March 1X, and PL was told to expect UPS to deliver her new modem “a couple of days” before that. By March 1X-1 no modem had arrived, so PL made a followup call to AT&T. She was assured that UPS would deliver the modem that evening, and that the installation tech was still scheduled to come the next day.

Like many 99 percenters, PL has to work two jobs to pay for the greed of Wall Street and the wars and waste of Washington. She had taken unpaid time off from her day job to be home for the new Internet modem installation, but was hoping to still be able to work that night. By midday no installer had called or come by, so she made another followup call to AT&T. This time – and for the first time – she heard the word “U-verse”, was told she was supposed to either open the box and install the modem herself or pay an additional $160.00, that the technician was coming by to terminate her DSL not install her U-verse, and that she didn’t need to be home for that. That meant PL had sacrificed a day’s pay for nothing – and that AT&T expected a person with absolutely no IT training or experience to install their own cabling, configure a wireless access modem, and activate their own U-verse service!

PL didn’t have “an additional $160.00”, so she opened the box and did her best to follow the complicated instructions inside and configure the modem. It didn’t work. But after holding 20 minutes then spending an hour more talking to an escalation of U-verse support techs, she learned that she had done everything right but the problem was the U-verse activation software did not work with some major web browsers – including hers. The U-verse tech finally activated the service from his end, and began the process of creating an ATT email account for PL. PL told the tech she did not want an ATT email account, and there ended their exchange and – PL thought – her AT&T U-verse installation nightmare.

A few weeks passed, then PL received one of the two $100.00 gift cards AT&T had promised. Coincidentally perhaps, on that same day she received a letter from the AT&T Accounts Receivable Center which scolded and threatened her as follows:

“Did you forget to pay your bill? Our records show that your account balance is $164.95 which includes a past due amount of $164.95… If payment is not received by April 2X, 2012 your AT&T U-verse service may be temporarily disconnected. If your service is temporarily disconnected, in addition to paying all outstanding charges, a restoral fee may apply. The restoral charge is $30 per U-verse product and/or service on your account… For accounts that remain unpaid for ten (10) days after interruption, service will be permanently disconnected.”

PL was shocked. She’d paid every AT&T bill she’d received, so she called the number in the letter – 800.228.2020 – to find out what was going on. It was then she learned from AT&T U-verse’s Lavonne M. (employee number LM154X) that from now on she’d be receiving a U-verse bill separate from her AT&T phone bill, and that the reason she had never seen her U-verse bill was because it was being emailed to the ATT email account she never had access to. PL asked Lavonne M. to break down the $164.95 balance for her, but the only amount PL recognized was the $100.00 modem charge. PL paid that with her $100.00 gift card, and asked if she could wait to pay the remainder until she had a copy of the bill to review. Lavonne M. told her that would be fine, and assured PL that her U-verse service would not be disconnected.

Lavonne M. lied. At just after 8:00am on the morning of April 2X+1, U-verse disconnected PL. She called ATT Uverse and asked to speak to Lavonne M., and was told that “wasn’t possible”. She requested to speak to a supervisor, and after holding several minutes got one and shared her sad story. The supervisor coldly told PL her only option at this point was to pay the $64.95 balance plus a $30.00 reconnect fee. PL refused, and demanded to speak to a manager. She was again told that “wasn’t possible”, but she could leave a number and a manager would call her back. PL did. Six hours later, an AT&T U-verse manager who did not offer her name or direct extension did in fact call PL back. PL told her everything in agonizing detail, based upon which the manager restored PL’s U-verse service so long as PL settled her balance by May 1X. PL agreed, with the stipulation that she would not pay the bill if she did not receive a bill to pay.

Deciding not to wait, that evening PL set out to settle her affairs with ATT Uverse. She called 800.228.2020 and couldn’t get past the bots to a human, so she went online to “chat” with AT&T U-verse support here:

http://www.att.com/esupport/main.jsp?cv=812

She connected and started chatting with a support rep named Rajma-something whose English was not, in PL’s words, “American”. She said she had a billing issue, and Raj replied he could assist her if she gave him the details. PL typed away. Raj asked questions indicating he did not understand, and PL typed some more. After several exchanges with lengthy delays in between, Raj declared his role was actually Tech Support so he couldn’t help her. PL demanded to chat with Raj’s supervisor. He came online with another “Indian-sounding” name and had PL jump through the same hoops as Raj did before admitting he could do nothing to assist her either. Furious by this time, PL introduced the supposed Indian to some choice American expletives, disconnected and went to bed crying.

The following morning, PL called the 877.288.7973 number “Raj” had given her to track down her second and missing $100.00 gift card. Not surprisingly, it was the wrong number. She then found and called the right number – 800.288.9983 – and connected with the AT&T Rewards Center. Employee number EV2455 checked her account, apologized for their “input error”, and assured PL her second gift card would be on its way “in a few weeks”.

Finally, PL called AT&T U-verse Billing Support yet again to try to find out what the composition of her unpaid balance was. When she did, she was surprised to hear the balance was now $48.00 higher than she’d previously been told, the increment being one more month’s U-verse billing. She advised the billing rep that she’d been sold 6meg Internet service for $24.95 a month, and that she would not pay a penny more. The AT&T rep said that’s not what their records showed, and there was nothing she could do to correct it. PL demanded to speak to a supervisor again, and was placed on hold for several minutes. When someone finally picked up, it was not a supervisor but another billing rep! PL was ready to explode, but instead again declared that she’d been sold 6meg Internet service for $24.95 a month, and that she would not pay a penny more. Unlike the last rep, this one promptly reduced PL’s monthly rate to $24.95 and applied retroactive credits to correct the overbilling, which along with the “un-input” gift card PL now believes was intentional.

What do YOU think, America? Is AT&T U-verse serving the People, or fleecing the Sheeple?
